I stayed in a private room with two twin...[More]; The Utels Youth Hostel (aka City Central Youth Hostel) in Shanghai provided everything I needed for a comfortable stay at an amazingly affordable price. I stayed in a private room with two twin beds, TV, desk, and ensuite bathroom. I found the bed to be comfortable, but some people might feel it is a bit hard. The shower was very nice and I had no problems with water temperature or pressure. The restaurant/bar area was very inviting and served good food at reasonable prices. Most of the staff at the desk spoke good English and I had no problems with communications. The staff were very friendly, although often overwhelmed with work. While there, I met many English speaking guests and enjoyed interacting with them. The subway station is across the main road, about a 5 minute walk from the Hostel. There are many shops and restaurants along the roads near the hostel. BTW, I am not a "youth" but felt very comfortable here among all age groups. This was my first visit to a Hostel, but I enjoyed it and will definitely return.; Value: 5 Rooms: 4 Location: 4 Cleanliness: 5 Service: 5

Initially on my...[More]; Shanghai hostel international I have stayed at the Shanghai Internetional Hostel on several ocassions. As an expat working in Shanghai, some colleagues introduced me to the place. Initially on my first trip to Shanghai, I had opted to stay in a hotel. As I was worried about staying in a hostel. I must admit, that I am more of a luxury traveler anyway. So I was definitely put off by hostels, and bad hostel experiences in the UK. The hostel is located in the Putou district of Shanghai. It is very lively and vibrant, has local fast food chains, such as KFC, Mcdonands, local street food, noodle places, and a Carrefour supermarket. It is within a short walking distance to Caoyang Road station. It is far from the centre, ie. Peoples square. However it is only a short metro ride, and you do not feel like you are miles away from all the excitement, because it is in a local area and it is still very busy during the day. The staff at the hostel are excellent, they will order taxis for you, and do whatever they can to help you. They register and check you in quickly. I never had any problems with my room there. The room was smaller, than my hotel room which was huge in comparison. But for one person, I did not need such a large room, and my hotel did not even have places to eat 24 hours a day,whereas the hostel provides food and international food, until late. The food there is reasonably priced, and the breakfast is ample. Some of the staff recognised when I had been back several times, which made me feel very warm and welcome to be there again. I thought that the girls running the hostel, are doing an excellent job. She even wrote a hello in my coffee, and a hey in chinese characters in my friends coffee. They really do go that little mile extra to make you feel at home. For me it is a home away from home, and they have internet available, to use in the hostel. Wi-fi is included free of charge so you can bring your own laptop. They have a common room area, which has a lot of really comfortable sofas, and a pool table and bar. I have to say that they were not restocked often, and had regularly ran out of things such as ginger. I think they need to improve on this, and that is my only criticism. You can hire a single room, with bathroom, which is just like a hotel room, but at a cheaper price. I really love this hostel and I will definitely stay there again, if I return to Shanghai. Taxis are available during the night, and it is signposted once you reach the main road, so when you are visiting for the first time, it is easy to find. They also provide late check out for a fee, and free maps of the metro system. They can also organise tours for you, or book your train tickets.; Value: 5 Rooms: 5 Location: 4 Cleanliness: 5 Service: 5

We booked a 4 bed dorm for the first three nights before we would head to Xi'an for a couple nights and then the...[More]; A friend and I stayed here around Christmas time, and we really enjoyed our stay. We booked a 4 bed dorm for the first three nights before we would head to Xi'an for a couple nights and then the same thing for a week and a half after that. The price was high for China, but it is Shanghai so that is to be expected. The staff was average. Friendly but did not go out of their way. Not bad though. The lobby area has lots of places to sit as does the lounge/restaurant/bar area. There are several computers that you can pay to use. The food is decently priced and pretty good. There is also wifi in the lobby. You can rent bikes if you want. There is a guy who will book your train/ plane/ bus tickets, but he tried (not purposely at first) to rip us off, so we decided it would be cheaper and easier to do it yourself. The hostel is about a 7 min walk from the Subway. It's easy to find and convenient. We took a taxi from the airport when we first got in, and then took the subway the next morning. One thing I really liked was the free breakfast. Cereal, milk, juice, bread, steamed pork buns, and porridge...can't beat it. We filled up on breakfast so we could save money. :) The rooms were decent sized with spacious, comfortable beds, lockers, aircon and heat, and a small desk. The bathrooms were mostly clean. Hard water in the showers but no mold that I saw. Really nice hot showers! The cleaning service times were a bit strange. We ended up having the room to ourselves for 4 nights and shared with various people the other nights. The laundry room is decent. It has 2 washers and one dryer. It is decently priced. They also have a laundry pick up service, but we decided to save money and do it on our own. After you cross the big road as you're walking to the subway, there is a little hair shop on your right. For a very cheap price they will give you a shampoo/head massage, shoulder and neck massage, blow dry, and style. They didn't speak any English, but they were nice and did a great job and I mean it was CHEAP. Around the hostel there are convenience stores, a couple mcdonalds, a place to book train tickets, and just random shops. The location is a bit far from the city center, but not bad really at all. Overall, I enjoyed my stay here. I would definitely go back, and I give it two thumbs up.; Value: 3 Rooms: 4 Location: 3 Cleanliness: 4 Service: 3

I would recommend it above any other hostel in Shanghai. The atmosphere is very friendly, the rooms are of a good size and the beds are comfortable, there is overall cleanliness, the bar staff are sociable, there are a wide range of dishes and drinks on offer, and the hostel staff are very ready to provide information on anything from tours, to maps and advice. There is also a good laundry service - 15 yuan per kilo, delivered back the same day. The hostel location is good - not central, but close enough, and far back enough from the street that noisy Shanghai does not bother sleep. However, some negatives must be mentioned: - Overall, the hostel is clean. However, the general impression is that it is kept clean but that there are areas where this could be improved. The restaurant area smells musty in places, for example. - Sleep quality is overall good, but sometimes room cleaning and noisy maintenance is a nuisance. During my stay, I was woken by room cleaning at 8am; and one morning some maintenance drilling in the room above started at 8.30am...even though my room had a 'do not disturb' sign outside. - Maintenance is obviously not done on a regular basis. The shower unit in my room was so leaky that after every shower there was a lake on the floor. - The in-room internet (via ethernet/LAN cable) was good, although very slow. However, the LAN and wifi were impossible to access in the public parts of the hostel - and I talked to 4 or 5 people who had the same access problem. - The front desk staff is sometimes unwilling to admit that there could be a problem. For example, when the four or five people above all said they could not connect to wifi, the staff flatly argued that it was our problem, not a network issue. When, two days later they finally investigated, they found that it was indeed a network problem. - Room cleaning is good, but again, there are gaps. My room was cleaned regularly, but then again, in 4 days' stay, dirty tea/coffee cups were never replaced with clean ones, and one look under the bed made me want never to look under there again. - Some prices in the hostel are pretty crazy. For example, a coffee costs the same as a main dish. - Tours are largely overpriced, and in Chinese. You're better off taking the bus/train to Hangzhou or the water villages yourself, saving up to 50-70% on what you would have paid at the hostel. However, there are also good points: - Room cleaning staff are friendly and eager to help. - Rooms get cleaned until pretty late in the day. So, if you're jetlagged and leave your room at 2pm, you room will be clean when you come back. - The hostel is great socially. There is a good mix of backpackers and normal tourists. - Free breakfast. - Movies in the evening. - The desk staff can get train tickets for you easily. - The desk staff can arrange transfers to the airport for 200 yuan. - The 'free' internet (1 yuan) is good, but can get crowded.; Value: 3 Rooms: 3 Location: 3 Cleanliness: 2 Service: 4

The rooms come with:- Super comfy bed TV Writing desk Spotless bathroom with enclosed shower (good for me as I HATE wet room bathrooms) Kettle and free tea bags Free toiletries Air Con (excellent in winter when Shanghai is FREEZING) Internet connection Clean towels every day Room cleaned everyday The Utel aso has a resturante/ bar on the ground floor which serve up excellent food any time of day. the Utel also offers a free (all you can eat) breakfast buffet which I thought was the best I've come accross in the world of the free hostel breakfast. I've read some people moaning that its not worth getting up for but I entirely disagree. You get a choice of about 5 cereals with either cold or hot cows milk or hot soy milk which is delicious. Toast and all you can eat butter, jam and orange juice. There is also an Asian option which includes pork buns, red bean porridge and some other bits that I dont know what the're called. The only thing you dont get is tea and coffee but thats in the room so happy days. In my opinion a free breakfast when your a penny pinching backpacker is like finding money on the street! Its an excellent money saver. The staff are super friendly and can advise you on anything and book any tickets you may need. There is a massive library of books that can be exchanged. This Utel is not cheap but when we were researching where to stay in Shanghai it was the cheapest. Condsidering it was the cheapest we could find I was made up that it was so excellent!! The only downside is that its not very central although it is right next to a subway station so no worries. Plus Shanghai is pretty spaced out anyway so no where is near everything.; Value: 3 Rooms: 5 Location: 1 Cleanliness: 5 Service: 5
