Reception staff are surly and expressionless, appear totally uninterested in their job or their clients...[More]; The hotel looks impressive from outside, but once inside, it's all downhill from there. Reception staff are surly and expressionless, appear totally uninterested in their job or their clients. Upon arrival, we were warned by our tour guide to carefully check the room before accepting it. He advised that if there was anything broken or damaged that we would be charged for it upon departure. Several of our group found that the power switch (the one activated by inserting the key fob) either didn't work or fell off the wall when the key was inserted! (my experience). One party in our group had NO power or lights in the room and was told that "As it's late and you are only sleeping, why do you need lights!" We stayed two nights. We went down to breakfast EARLY the first day to find very little choice or quantity available. What WAS available was cold, probably because the temperature in the dining room was about 11degrees. The The second day we went later, to find that all the food seemed to have gone! There was more food in the form of scraps and drips on the tablecloths of the serving tables than there was in the serving dishes. It looked like the aftermath of a food fight in a primary school. It was still freezing in the dining room, the "maitre d'" was wearing a heavy brown overcoat and stamping her feet to keep warm! When walking between the tables, on the way to the servery, one was at severe risk of being run over by uncaring staff pushing huge trolleys of dirty plates and food scraps. The rooms were pleasantly large, but furnished in a style reminiscent of cold-war spy movies. However, the bathroom was provided with a comprehensive supply of contraceptives and genital disinfectant lotions, both male and female, possibly for the use of clients of the "Passion Club" which is attached to the hotel. All-in-all, a memorable stay, but for all the wrong reasons.; Value: 2 Rooms: 3 Location: 4 Cleanliness: 2 Service: 2

It was bigger than...[More]; Apart from the really slow check out and check in, I really liked this hotel. On our first two nights there, we were given the Executive Suite as the standard rooms were full. It was bigger than our apartment in Shanghai! It was lovely with everything you need and large windows letting in lots of light. When we returned, we got the standard room and to my surprise, it was even nicer than the executive suite. The foot massage is fantastic as they have large comfortable chairs, and, if you choose you can put HBO on your own personal computer and watch a movie. Or you can switch it off and relax. As there are two seats alongside each other, it creates a bit of tension if you want to relax and your partner wants to watch an action movie on HBO! On the negative side, the breakfasts were a really ghastly experience. They have awful shell pink table cloths and it is really difficult to find a place that is not full of food stains and crumbs. Even if the staff do sweep the crumbs off, the food stains remain. I found this very off-putting. Why they don't get glass tops that they can wipe down quickly, I don't know. Much more hygienic. The location is OK if you don't mind a bit of walking. It is about a 25 minute walk to Walking Street. As you leave the hotel turn right, then turn right down the small alley until you hit the main street and turn right again. Just keep walking till you come to some arches. Cross the road and you are in Walking Street which, if you crave junk food, has a McDonalds, a KFC and a Pizza Hut. There are also some wonderful Chinese restaurants in the same street but on the other side of the road and closer to the hotel. We found a fantastic restaurant serving Yunan food which was so cheap and really delicious. Beware room service and odd looking objects wrapped in cellophane. On one of the nights we stayed, we were exhausted so we decided to watch a movie on HBO and order Room Service. I ordered Hainan Chicken Rice and it was so bad, I had one mouthful and couldn't eat the rest. My fault, as I know that unless you are staying in the Sofitel, room service food is not exactly haute cuisine. Usually room service food isn't THIS bad though. At least you can normally eat it. What was really galling though was that there was this bun looking thing in cellophane on the coffee table. We looked at it for two days and eventually I decided to open it to see what it was. One bite was enough to establish that it was a particularly unpleasant moon cake so it got tossed straight into the dustbin. When we went to check out, they charged us for it. OK so the amount was negligible, which makes it all the more mean of them. If you are going to charge for something, at least indicate somewhere in the room that it is not a complimentary item. AND make sure that the item is edible. Otherwise, I would recommend this hotel as the rooms are great and the massage excellent.

Aber das Hotel ist nicht mit Luxus überhäuft. Es ist ok zum übernachten und ein wenig arbeiten. Das Frühstück ist gut und es gibt auch westliches Frühstücksbuffet. Das Hotel ist mehr ein Tipp für Chinesen die auf Kunming Touristik aus sind. Mir gefällt es da und ich würde wieder buchen aber auch nur wegen der Top Lage für mich. Es ist sauber!!! Wichtig ist hier das man kein Zimmer zu Straße bekommt da dieses etwas laut ist. Auf der anderen Seite des Hotel ist es perfekt und man kann gut schlafen. Ein Tipp ist sicherlich die kleine Teestube in der Lobby. Dort kann man als Gast kostenlos Tee trinken. Super guten Tee!!
