For this we were "punished" with the "special walk-in" rate of...[More]; We didn't not think we would have difficulties finding a hotel room in Kunming, especially this time of year, so we made no reservation. For this we were "punished" with the "special walk-in" rate of over 400$. We didn't feel like changing hotels so we decided to stay for one night. Later on that day we decided to extend our stay and to avoid paying another 400$ we made a reservation over the internet. The rate was 150$ for the same room, the same service, the same everything. Needles to say the receptionist (we were "lucky" enough to get the same one) was not too thrilled about circumventing the "system". I would also like to comment on what i believe to be the worst gym any self-proclaimed 4 star hotel has. The equipment was practically rusted and there was not way one could actually exercise. I gave up using the threadmill after 5 minutes and after trying a couple of other equipment i gave up working out all together. The worst incident came on second and last day, over the breakfast. I decided to try their pastry and to my surprise, the muffin was old and rotten. My belief is maybe once it was a good hotel, but nowadays they have nothing to show for themselves, except the location. But if you come to Kunming for visiting as we did the rooms have...[More]; The recently refurbished hotel has extremely well equipped rooms, even if their size is relatively small for such a 5 stars hotel. But if you come to Kunming for visiting as we did the rooms have everything you need. The French restaurant is very good (pay attention the Chef is leaving in Jan 2010) and we did not try the Chinese one. Spa and recreation facilities are of very good standard, but the employees are always chasing for additional tips... The hotel location is attractive right in front of the lake. Globally we would recommend this hotel but the price must be severely discussed. Do not go above 1000 Rmb (what we paid), and ideally try to go to 800 Rmb for a room including breakfeasts which is what they are worth considering the town of Kunming. They tried to charge us 500 RMb for an additional bed for a child, but we finally get away with 100 Rmb which is more reasonable.; Value: 2 Rooms: 4 Location: 5 Cleanliness: 5 Service: 4

We stayed at one of the newly refurbished executive rooms and we are...[More]; We last stayed @ Green Lake Hotel in 2006 and despite some negative reviews from other reviewers, we decided to stay here again. We stayed at one of the newly refurbished executive rooms and we are very pleased with the room. The only comment is that one side of the bathroom (clear glass wall) overlooks the bed and sitting area. This may pose a privacy issue if you are travelling with a friend. Service has improved and the front desk personnel are able to converse in English. The hotel is just a 5-10 mins walk across the Green Lake Park.which is a hive of activity in the morning where there are many people dancing, singing and practicing their wushu. From the airport, it costs about 24-27 RMB and to the shopping belt at Nan Ping Jie, the taxifare is about RMB 10-12. To the left of the hotel (about 10 mins walk) there is a courtyard style quaint restaurant called Shi Ping Hui Guan which serves a decent Yunnan fare. We had dinner there and it costs us RMB 340. It has a terrific location across from Green Lake, which has wonderful restaurants, parks, and shops. The problem is the beds are very hard, and the rooms are small with no amenities. The bathroom, is very small and use the old bath tub/shower combination. It is very small. The rest of the property shows its age in other ways. If you can live with hard beds and want a great location, then maybe it is the place for you. Its location cannot be beat. Only drawback was a lack of...[More]; This place was wonderfully luxurious and a terrific location right on Green Lake Park. It was wonderful to walk right out our door to take a stroll around the lake. Only drawback was a lack of great restaurants in walking distance. There were restaurants, but not very good ones. Had to get a cab to get to good dinners. Staff was terrific and helped us book travel to our next destination and a trip to the nearby Stone Forest.; Value: 4 Rooms: 5 Location: 5 Cleanliness: 4 Service: 5
